Port of Dakar is facing increasing congestion as container volumes continue to grow, pushing Senegal to accelerate the development of the new Ndayane deep-water port, a strategic infrastructure project expected to transform logistics in West Africa.

Currently handling over 800,000 TEUs annually, Dakar port has reached its operational limits, leading to vessel delays, longer dwell times, and higher logistics costs for importers and exporters. The congestion has become a bottleneck not only for Senegal but also for landlocked countries such as Mali, which depend heavily on Dakar as a trade gateway.

To address these challenges, Senegal is investing in the Port of Ndayane, a modern deep-water facility developed in partnership with DP World. The new port is expected to have an initial capacity of 1.2 million TEUs, with future expansion plans exceeding 3 million TEUs, positioning it as one of the largest ports in the region.

The transition from Dakar to Ndayane marks a strategic shift aimed at improving port efficiency, reducing congestion, and strengthening Senegal’s role as a logistics hub in West Africa. Once operational, Ndayane is expected to enhance regional trade flows significantly and attract new shipping services.
