In a development that signals changing patterns in African trade logistics, Ghana successfully transported 26 tonnes of fresh mangoes to Morocco by road during 2025, marking the first time this perishable commodity has moved between the two countries through a fully overland corridor.

The initiative was revealed by Ghana’s Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, during a national accountability briefing in late January 2026. According to her statement, trucks originating from Morocco travelled south to Ghana, loaded the mango consignments, and completed the return journey by road.

While Ghana is a long-standing exporter of mangoes by sea and air to Europe and other markets, this shipment represents a new logistics approach aimed at strengthening intra-African trade links and exploring alternative corridors for agricultural exports.

The overland route demonstrates the increasing feasibility of connecting West Africa to North Africa through road freight solutions, particularly for time-sensitive agricultural products that require controlled transit conditions.

Officials described the shipment as part of Ghana’s broader efforts to diversify export channels and expand regional market access for its agribusiness sector. The move also reflects growing commercial exchanges between Morocco and West African countries, supported by improving transport connectivity and trade cooperation.

The success of this delivery highlights how road freight — traditionally underutilized for long-distance perishable exports in Africa — may play a larger role in future regional supply chains, particularly under the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
