Ethiopia Accelerates Logistics Reforms to Cut Cargo Clearance Time to Under 5 Days
Cargo Clearance

Ethiopia is intensifying its logistics and customs reforms to reduce cargo clearance time from an average of 10–15 days to less than 5 days, aiming to improve trade efficiency and reduce import bottlenecks across the country.

As a landlocked economy heavily dependent on external trade routes, Ethiopia relies primarily on the Djibouti corridor for imports and exports. Delays in customs clearance and administrative procedures have historically increased logistics costs, impacting both businesses and consumers.

Recent reforms include the digitalization of customs processes, improved coordination between logistics agencies, and the introduction of streamlined clearance procedures. These measures are expected to significantly reduce dwell times, improve supply chain visibility, and enhance trade competitiveness.

By accelerating logistics efficiency, Ethiopia is positioning itself as a more attractive market for investment and trade. The reforms could also serve as a model for other landlocked African countries seeking to optimize their supply chains and reduce trade costs.
