Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway

Standard Gauge Railway Kenya continues to reshape Kenya’s logistics landscape, with freight volumes increasing by approximately 15% year-on-year, as more cargo shifts from road to rail.

The railway, connecting the Port of Mombasa to Nairobi and further inland regions, plays a critical role in improving cargo movement efficiency. By reducing dependence on road transport, the SGR has helped cut transit times, lower transportation costs, and reduce road congestion.

Handling millions of tonnes of cargo annually, the SGR has become a key component of Kenya’s supply chain infrastructure, supporting both domestic distribution and regional trade. It also serves as a strategic corridor for landlocked countries such as Uganda and South Sudan.

The continued growth of rail freight highlights the importance of multimodal logistics systems in Africa. As Kenya expands its railway network and integrates it with port operations, the country is strengthening its position as a regional logistics hub in East Africa.
